Michael Jon Lindstrom died December 21, 2011, at the Courage Cottage in Morris, MN, following an 18 month battle with small cell lung cancer.

Michael was born January 20, 1940, in Milwaukee, WI. He was one of three boys born to Darrel and Evelyn (Allen) Lindstrom. As a young boy he lived in Yetter, IA; Worthington, MN; and finally Redwood Falls, MN. He graduated from Redwood Falls High school in 1957. Upon graduation Mike joined the Marine Corps for three years. During his time in the Marines Mike's parents moved to Boise, Idaho. After his discharge from the Marines, Mike attended Boise Junior College. In 1965 Mike graduated from the University of Idaho (UI) with a Bachelors of Science degree in Soil Science. Mike was granted a Research Fellow position at UI, and during that time he completed his Master of Science degree in 1967. Subsequently, Mike worked at the Dryland Research Unit, Lind, WA, as a senior experimental aide from 1967 to 1973 while he pursued his doctorate at Washington State University in Pullman, WA. Upon receipt of his PhD in 1973 he accepted a position with Oregon State University funded by the Rockefeller Foundation. In this role he was based at the Wheat Research and Training Center in Ankara, Turkey. Following three years in Ankara, Mike accepted a position in 1976 with the USDA-ARS Soils Lab in Morris, MN, where his research involved a wide range of topics, but emphasized tillage and soil erosion.

Mike married Evelyn Strait on August 31, 1962 in Boise, ID. To this union two children were born, Brian and Michelle. Mike was an avid reader, enjoyed his annual spearing trip with Morris friends, his annual Canada fishing trip with his uncle, brother and cousin, attending his grand children's activities, especially their sports.

Mike enjoyed the challenge of defying Mother nature as to when was the best time to plant his garden. Mike was always ready to lend a helping hand.

Mike held long-time memberships in the American Society of Agronomy, Soil Science Society of America, Soil and Water Conservation Society and International Soil Tillage Research Organization. He was very active in the Soil and Water Conservation Society, where he served on the Minnesota State Chapter Executive Board for three years, 1988-1990; President of Minnesota Chapter in l989; and Associate Research Editor for the Journal of Soil and Water Conservation for six years, 1994-2000. He became a Fellow of the Soil and Water Conservation Society in 1994 and was awarded the President's Citation in 1996. Mike was active in the formation of the Tillage Erosion Working Group within the International Soil Tillage Research Organization and was appointed Chairman in 2000. After retirement from USDA-ARS in 2002, Mike was an official collaborator (that is, researcher emeritus) at the North Central Soil Conservation Research Laboratory until his death.

Mike is survived by his wife, Evelyn; son Brian (Heather) of Hammond, WI; daughter Michelle (Jeff) Urlaub of Eau Claire, WI; and three grandchildren, Noelle and Andrew Urlaub, and Brenna Lindstrom, one brother, Tom (Linda), Uncle Dick (Diane) Allen and nieces, nephews and cousins.
