July 12, 1916 — December 22, 2011

Milton E. Carlson, 95, passed away on Thursday, December 22nd, at the Berkshire Residence in Osseo, MN. Funeral services will be held at Fron Lutheran Church in Starbuck, MN on Tuesday, December 27th, at 11:00 AM. Visitation will be at the Starbuck Funeral Home in Starbuck on Monday, December 26th, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM.

Milton was born in Argyle, MN on July 12, 1916 to Emil and Esther Carlson. He graduated Argyle High School and attended Concordia College in Moorhead, MN in 1937 before transferring to the University of Minnesota. He graduated the U of M in 1941 with degrees in English, Science, and Agriculture.

Following college, he taught vocational agriculture in Halstad, MN. There he met his wife, Florence Ommodt, who was also a teacher, and they were married on November 21, 1942. They had two children: Kay and Don.

Milton went on to farm and formed his own business in Halstad - Valley Farmers Supply and Hatchery - with his brother, Dale, and also served several terms as mayor of Halstad. In 1962, the family moved to Starbuck, MN where he resumed teaching and coaching at Starbuck High School; Florence serving as school librarian.

After retirement, Milton stayed active in community life as City Forrester for Starbuck; responsible for the planting of hundreds of trees in the community. He enjoyed "watching things grow." With his good friends, Corny Nordaune and Lute Nelson, he was always in search of the "elusive keeper walleye." Following the death of Florence in 1999, he also enjoyed extended winter trips to Texas – thanks to the help of his good friend, David Baukol.

Preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Florence, and his brothers, Hervey and Dale, he is survived by: his children, Kay Newstrom and her husband, Keath, of Brooklyn Center, MN, and Don Carlson of Houston, TX; a sister, Judy Andeen and husband, Lloyd, of Breckenridge, MN; a sister-in-law, Lois Carlson of Bemidji, MN; numerous nieces and nephews; and many good and valued friends.

Pall bearers: Steve Hippe, Paul Hippe, Arne Pederson, Roy Toivonen, Warren Olson, and Wayne Norby. Honorary pall bearers: all those that called Milton "friend." He was a member of Fron Lutheran and burial will be in the church cemetery.
