Funeral services for Myles Thorstad of Morris will be held Monday, January 7, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Chokio. Reverend Gloria Anderson will be officiating. Visitation will be held Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris and for one hour prior to services at the church on Monday. Burial will be in Lands Cemetery in Hoffman. Military rites will be provided by the Chokio American Legion.
Myles John Thorstad, son of Ole "Burney" and Cora (Munson) Thorstad, was born April 10, 1922 in rural Hoffman, Minnesota. He was baptized in 1922 and confirmed in 1935 at Lands Lutheran Church. While Myles attended School District #49 in rural Hoffman he also worked for family and neighbors. Following his schooling, he enlisted in the United States Navy, serving on the USS Cleveland as a Fire Control Man Third Class. When Myles received an honorable discharge in 1945, he returned to the Morris area, where he owned and operated the Morris Oil Company. He was united in marriage to Irene Nelson on May 24, 1947. Following their marriage, the couple would later move to South Carolina, where Myles owned and operated a sanitation service in Spartanburg. They moved back to the family farm near Hoffman and Myles began driving school bus, working as a custodian and mechanic. They then moved to Chokio, where Myles continued as a transportation supervisor for the Chokio School. Irene died on December 10, 1991. On December 27, 1993, Myles married Esther Gosnell in Greenville, South Carolina. The couple spent their winters in South Carolina and summers in Minnesota.
Myles was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Chokio. He was also a member of the Hoffman and Chokio American Legion Club. Myles would repair, improve and organize everything he worked on. He kept a journal of his life. Myles enjoyed spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Myles died on Thursday, January 3, 2013 at West Wind Village in Morris, MN, having lived to reach the age of 90 years.
He is survived by his wife: Esther Thorstad of South Carolina; three sons: Gary Thorstad of Alexandria, Leroy (Sylvia) Thorstad of Hoffman and Keith (Madella) Thorstad of Chokio and one daughter: Karen (Lowell) Moser of Morris; nine grandchildren: Alex Thorstad, Sarah (Eden) Meyer, Jennifer (Sam) Rose, Daniel Thorstad, Melissa D'Aloia, Justin (Tiffany) Thorstad, Heather (Brad) Krosch, Travis Moser and Rachel Moser; four great-grandchildren: Gretchen Meyer, Keira Rose, Braeden Thorstad and Chance Thorstad; three step-daughters: Sandy Johnson of Spartanburg, SC, Kathy Moseley of Woodruff, SC and Deb Lankford of Greenville, SC; three brothers: Earl Thorstad of Barrett, Lemay (Lillian) Thorstad of Kensington and Maynard (Carol) Thorstad of Hoffman and two sisters: Bernice Boerner of Alexandria and Ruth Ann (Bill) Star of Grand Rapids. He was preceded in death by his first wife: Irene; great-grandson: Degen Meyer; step-daughter: Norma Shuler; his parents; three brothers: Kenneth, Eugene and Orville and three sisters: Genevia, Irene and Lois.
Pallbearers for the service are Justin Thorstad, Daniel Thorstad, Alex Thorstad, Travis Moser, Dale Thorstad, Michael Bruer and Todd Thorstad. Julene Amborn will serve as organist for the service with Wendy Steuck serving as soloist. Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris is in charge of the arrangements.
