Funeral services for Obert Braaten of Nora Township, rural Farwell, MN will be held Monday, February 25, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. at Nora Lutheran Church near Kensington. Visitation will be held Sunday from 3 to 5:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 5:00 at the Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris and for one hour prior to services at the church on Monday. Burial will be in Nora Lutheran Cemetery, rural Kensington.
Obert Leland Braaten, son of John O. and Mina (Larson) Braaten, was born October 16, 1920 in Nora Township in Pope County, Minnesota, and was baptized and confirmed at Nora Lutheran Church. Obert began his schooling at School District #50 thru the 8th grade and later graduated from Kensington High School. Obert took over the family farm. On June 12, 1948, he was united in marriage to Ethel Hanson at Ness Lutheran Church in Elbow Lake by Reverend O.G. Aasen. Following their marriage, the couple continued dairy and grain farming in Nora Township. After selling the dairy herd to his oldest son, Obert and Ethel became DHIA (Dairy Herd Improvement Association) supervisors until 1994 when computers replaced paper and pencil. Obert read REA (Runestone Electric Association) meters until computerized turtles took his place. In June, 2008, Obert and Ethel moved to Skyview Court in Morris. Ethel passed away on April 2, 2010. Obert continued to live at Skyview until October, 2011, when he moved to the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck.
Obert was a lifelong member of Nora Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council. He was also a member of the Heart to Heart Club and a member of the Kensington School Board. Obert spent many years as a volunteer driver for the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck. He enjoyed reading, ice fishing, feeding the squirrels, driving tractor, chopping wood and taking his daily walks.
Obert passed away peacefully as Jesus took his hand and reunited him once again with his beloved Ethel on Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at the Courage Cottage in Morris, Minnesota. Having lived to reach the age of 92 years.
He is survived by four children: Karen (Don) Auel of Elk River, David (Carol) Braaten of Farwell, James (Karen) Braaten of Kensington and Kevin (Leila) Braaten of Hancock; nine grandchildren: John (Sarah) Auel of Elk River, Ryan Auel of Princeton, Jeffrey (Heidi) Auel of Brainerd, Tina (Ryan) Biss of Wendell, Darrin (Maria) Braaten of Kensington, Joanna Braaten of Kensington, Alan Braaten of Kensington, Megan (Jonathan) Dove of Bozeman, MT and Nickolas Braaten of Hancock; six great-grandchildren: Katie Bedbury, Colin Bedbury, Erin Ethel Auel, Avery Auel, Inga Mae Auel and Dylan Braaten; one brother: Johnny (Beverly) Braaten; one sister: Mildred Dahlseng and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; three grandchildren and two brothers-in-law: Arnold Dahlseng and Gene Froemming.
Pallbearers for the service are: John Auel, Ryan Auel, Jeffrey Auel, Darrin Braaten, Alan Braaten, Nickolas Braaten, Ryan Biss and Jonathan Dove. Honorary pallbearers are Tina (Braaten) Biss, Joanna Braaten, Megan (Braaten) Dove, Sarah Auel, Heidi Auel and Maria Braaten. Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris is in charge of the arrangements.
