Orvald Norris Moen was born in Starbuck, Pope County, Minnesota on January 4, 1924 to Oscar and Nora (Pederson) Moen. He was baptized on January 27, 1924 at Fron Lutheran Church in Starbuck by Pastor M. Casper Johnshoy, and confirmed at East Zion Lutheran Church, rural Starbuck by Pastor K. R. Palmer. On July 18, 1954, Orvald was united in marriage to Frances V. Larson at Fron Lutheran Church. They enjoyed 52 years of marriage. Two children were born to this union, Laurie and Bruce.
Orvald and Fran farmed from 1954 until 1979 when the couple moved into Starbuck. Orvald owned and operated his own business until 1990 at which time he retired.
He enjoyed fishing, mechanics, inventing things and visiting with his family, friends and neighbors. His wife, children and granddaughters were very special to him. He was a kind and gentle man, and will be missed by his family and friends.
Orvald died on Saturday, November 4, 2006 at the Stevens Community Medical Center in Morris, having lived to reach the age of 82 years.
He is survived by his wife: Fran Moen of Starbuck; daughter: Laurie and her husband, Ron Kent of Clontarf; son: Bruce Moen and his wife, Luann of Benson; two granddaughters: Natasha Briann Moen of Mankato and Kristin Marie Moen of Willmar; sister: Lenora Danielson of Plymouth and her three children: Curt, Dale and Joy. Orvald was preceded in death by his parents and a nephew: Lee Warfield.
Honorary pallbearers for the service are Roger DeMuth, Wayne Lien, Leland Hanson, Gary Danielson, Rick Frass, Vernon Pederson, nieces, nephews and all those who called Orvald friend. Monica Gosseling will serve as organist for the service with Arne Pederson serving as soloist.
