The funeral for Patti Jo Rach, of Cyrus, Minnesota will be held on Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at 2:30 p.m. at First Lutheran Church in Morris, with Reverend Paul Erdal officiating. Visitation will be on Tuesday at the Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris from 5 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church.
Patti Jo Backberg, daughter of Melvin and Cecelia (Thomson) Backberg was born on October 23, 1952 in Wadena, Minnesota. She grew up and attended school in Staples, graduating from Staples High School in 1970. She attended St. Cloud State University before returning home and working at the phone company in Wadena. Patti was united in marriage to Thomas Rach on January 8, 1972 in Staples. The couple moved to Plattsmouth, Nebraska, where Tom was stationed with the U.S. Air Force. The couple returned to Staples in 1974, where Patti worked for the hospital. In 1981, Patti and Tom moved to Morris; Patti began working at the Stevens Community Medical Center in 1986. The couple built a home near Cyrus in 2003. Patti had continued to work at SCMC until the time of her death.
She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Morris, the Lakeside Ballroom Dance Club, where she and Tom loved to go and dance; and a member of the Morris Community Band. Patti enjoyed reading and working crossword puzzles. Family was extremely important to Patti, she loved to attend family functions and reunions; but most of all, and she loved spending time with her 4 grandchildren: Colin, Charles, Savannah and Taryne.
Patti died on Friday, July 19, 2013 at her home near Cyrus, having reached the age of 60 years old.
She is survived by her husband, Tom, Cyrus; two sons, Christopher (Christy) Rach, Elizabethton, TN and Justin (Michelle) Rach, St. Louis Park; one daughter, Abby (Bennet) Dostal, Hoffman; her mother, Cecelia Backberg, Staples; four brothers, William Backberg, Staples, Robert (Jill) Backberg, Brainerd, Thomas Backberg, Pillager and Peter Backberg, Staples; two sisters, Debra (Jeffery) Sumey, Browerville and Kari Kapphahn (Tyler Ehrmantraut), Wadena; four grandchildren, Colin and Taryne Dostal, Hoffman, Charles Rach, St. Louis Park, and Savannah Rach Elizabethton, TN; and her mother-in-law, Martha Rach, Staples. She is also survived by many in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins. Patti was preceded in death by her father, Melvin and father-in-law, Herman Rach.
