Peggy Jean Birt, daughter of Lloyd and Elaine (Newport) Birt, was born December 16, 1947 in Spencer, Iowa. She was baptized at United Methodist Church in Teril, Iowa. Peggy grew up and attended grade school in several places in the Twin Cities. She later received her beautician license at a cosmetology school in the twin cities. She worked as a beauty operator after school and as a waitress in Omaha, Nebraska for her sister Carol. Peggy moved to Starbuck in the Spring of 1986 to start a new life with her two young boys and to be near her mother Elaine. She met Gerry shortly after moving to Starbuck. She finally got her “farm boy.” They were united in marriage September 21, 1991 at Fron Lutheran Church in Starbuck and were able to spend just over 30 years together. The couple made their home in Starbuck where they ran Evergreen Ridge Mobile Home Park. She continued to live in Starbuck until the time of her death.
Peggy loved being a mother to her boys Chris and Aaron. She was a loving mother and wife. She loved nature and all animals, taking long drives in the country looking for deer and the adventure of going places. One of her favorite trips was to Alaska with Gerry and his sister, Ann in 2014. During the summer, she enjoyed fishing and pontoon trips on Lake Minnewaska. She saved many feral cats in town, tamed them and gave them to the Humane Society. Peggy always had a dog at her side to care for. She was also a great cook and will be remembered as making the best meatloaf and four bean casseroles. Her favorite music was the oldies, especially when she was cleaning the house, as well as watching Patrick Swayze movies, her favorite was Dirty Dancing. She spent many nights playing cards with the neighbors and especially liked winning the game hand and foot. Peggy was involved with the Starbuck Jaycees for several years, and more recently a captain for crime watch in Starbuck. She also worked part-time cleaning at DyCast Specialties for many years. Peggy enjoyed going to eat at restaurants, especially on Friday nights with Gerry, and attending family gatherings. She loved flowers and plants and had a green thumb to keep plants alive. She loved lilacs and her favorite color was purple or mauve. Peggy was always honest and upfront in everything she said and believed in. She will be missed deeply by her family and friends.
