Funeral services for Phyllis Gausman of Alberta, Minnesota will be held Tuesday, November 30, 2010 at 10:30 AM at Assumption Catholic Church in Morris. Father Tim Baltes will be officiating. Visitation will be held Monday from 3:00 to 8:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:30 at the Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris, and again for one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Morris.
Phyllis Elizabeth Bayerle, daughter of Raymond and Mary (Kuharski) Bayerle, was born June 13, 1920 in Saint Cloud, Minnesota. Phyllis's father, being employed as a captain on the Great Lakes, embarked the family on a semi transient life to the Great Lakes cities of Detroit, Michigan, Milwaukee, and Muskegon, Wisconsin and later to Minneapolis, Minnesota. In these cities Phyllis grew up and received her elementary and high school education. Furthering her studies, Phyllis received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1941 at the College of St. Catherine's in St. Paul, followed by her Master's Degree from St. Mary's College in Winona, Minnesota in 1980. Upon graduation in 1941, Phyllis embarked on her professional journey, moving to teach first at Alberta, Minnesota. In 1990 she retired after having taught English, Speech and Drama at Alberta, Glenwood, Chokio and Chokio-Alberta High Schools in Minnesota. At the University of Minnesota, Morris, Phyllis taught Methods in Teaching English. Phyllis taught internationally as well spending three years in China teaching English at the Hangzhou Language School. Additional professional accomplishments include being a published writer of poetry, journal writings and short stories.
Beyond teaching and writing Phyllis contributed significantly to a great variety of educational organizations. Within the Minnesota chapter of the American Association of University Women she served as Arts Chairman from 1956 to 1960, State President 1960 to 1962 and served on the State Board 1962 to 1964. In 1962, she also served as a lobbyist for the University of Minnesota, Morris. Phyllis served on the National and Minnesota Council of Teachers of English and the Speech Association of Minnesota. She was co-founder of the Lake Region Arts Council. Phyllis served as program director for the Learning Unlimited Program until just prior to her death.
Phyllis relished involvement in the community, having served on a variety of community boards and organizations. She was a member of the American Red Cross, served on the Alberta School Board and was among the founders of the Alberta Area Improvement Corporation, further serving that organization as treasurer. In fulfillment of her desire to help Native Americans, for over twenty years she transported clothing from Morris to the Sissetona�"Wahpeton Oyate branch of Souix in Sisseton.
After retirement Phyllis continued to reside near Alberta at her Century Awarded Farm. To her family, she was the Heart of the Farm. Phyllis was a member of Assumption Catholic Church in Morris for all the years she resided in the community. Phyllis loved spending time with her dogs, Bailey and Gretl and feeding and watching the birds on the farm. She especially loved spending time with her family, traveling across the United States and abroad with them.
Phyllis died on Thursday, November 25, 2010 at her farm near Alberta, Minnesota surrounded by family, having lived a full life reaching the age of 90 years.
She is survived by: one daughter: Kate Gausmann of Las Vegas, NV; two sons: Phillip (Joyce) Gausman of Alberta and Paul (Marni) Gausmann of Mays Lick, KY; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one sister: Mary (Rueben) Silver of Wilmington, NC. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother: Conrad Bayerle, and daughter-in-law Mona Gausman.
