The funeral for Phyllis Jane Medalen, of Starbuck, Minnesota will be held on Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the Fron Lutheran Church in Starbuck, with Reverend Paul Johnson officiating. Visitation will be on Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Starbuck Funeral Home and on Tuesday, one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at the Fron Lutheran Cemetery, Starbuck.
Phyllis Jane Rorvig, daughter of Martin and Alma (Feigum) Rorvig was born on November 19, 1931 in New Prairie Township near Cyrus, Minnesota. She was baptized on December 20, 1931 at the Cyrus Lutheran Church and confirmed on April 14, 1946 at the Solem Lutheran Congregational Church. Phyllis grew up in the Cyrus area, where she attended rural school at District #28. She was united in marriage to Harlan C. Medalen on August 12, 1948 at the parsonage in Cyrus. The couple made their home in Starbuck, where Phyllis worked for the Dairy Queen and also did housekeeping for several people. In 1965, Phyllis began working for the Minnewaska Hospital and Minnewaska Lutheran Home in the laundry department, where she continued to work for the next 40 years before retiring in 2005. Phyllis entered the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in November of 2011. Harlan died on December 10, 2011.
Phyllis was a member of Fron Lutheran Church and the Minnewaska Lutheran Home Auxiliary. She enjoyed baking, cooking, snowmobiling, fishing, shopping and listening to music. Phyllis also enjoyed watching family shows like "The Waltons". Most of all, Phyllis loved attending the sporting events of her family, and in later years her grandson, Cory.
Phyllis died on Friday, November 30, 2012 at the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck. She was 81 years old.
She is survived by one daughter, Karen (Todd) Johnshoy, and one grandson, Cory Johnshoy, all of Starbuck; three sisters, Adelaine Berg, Starbuck, Maxine Hohn, Farwell and Donna (Irving) Dewey, Fergus Falls, and several nieces and nephews. Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, an infant son, her parents, two brothers, Norval and Milton, one sister, Doris Norlien; four brothers-in-law, Leander Berg, Kenneth Norlien, Lester Hohn and Raymond Berswanger; and two sisters-in-law, Pearl and Jean Rorvig.
