Visitation will be held Friday, December 27, from 3-6 pm, with a prayer service at 5:30 at the Minnewaska Lutheran Home Chapel, Starbuck, MN.
Family and Friends service will be held Saturday, December 28, 10:30 am at the Thompson home church, Minnehaha Communion Lutheran, 4101 37th Ave S Minneapolis, MN, with visitation 1 hour prior. Burial will follow at Acacia Park Cemetery, 2151 Pilot Knob Rd Mendota Heights, MN on the Thompson Family lots.
The Reverend Tenner C Thompson II, age 89, of Alexandria, MN, died peacefully December 23, 2013 at Grand Arbor memory unit in Alexandria. Tenner was the second son of six children, born February 11, 1924 to Rev. Tenner and Grace (Sanders) Thompson at Fairview Hospital in Minneapolis. He was baptized April 13, 1924 and confirmed in the Lutheran faith on June 5, 1938 at Minnehaha Lutheran by his father, Rev. Tenner C Thompson I. He attended Hiawatha Jr. High and graduated from Roosevelt High, 1942. In April of that year he had surgery for a benign brain tumor at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. He worked for Grapette Bottling Co. and the Engineering department of Milwaukee Railroad doing survey work for 2 ½ years before attending Augsburg College, Minneapolis for one year. He transferred to Concordia College, Moorhead, and graduated in 1949 with a Bachelor of Arts. He was a tenor in the Concordia Choir under Paul J Christiansen and lettered on the tennis team. He enrolled at Luther Seminary in St. Paul in 1949, served an internship at Bethel Lutheran, Chicago in 1952 and graduated from Luther Seminary in 1953. He was ordained at Minnehaha Lutheran in May, 1953 by The Rev. Herman A. Prues, PhD.
Tenner served the following parishes: English and Bethany Lutherans, Grantsburg, WI: Prince of Peace Lutheran, Milwaukee, WI; English Lutheran, Ellsworth WI; Our Redeemers Lutheran, Williston, ND; Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran, Sydney, MT; Our Saviors Lutheran Halliday and Marshall Lutheran, Marshall, ND; St John's Lutheran, rural Starbuck, MN; and chaplain for Minnewaska Lutheran Home, Starbuck, MN. He received the Certificate for Clinical Pastoral Education January, 1992 from Fergus Falls Regional Treatment Center in Fergus Falls, MN.
The Rev. Thompson retired from 53 years of active ministry January, 2006 at the age of 82. During his years of ministry he gave emphasis to Evangelical P.T.R missions, yearly Evangelical guest speakers, and World Missions. He took a 2 month tour of ALC's world mission fields and gave many slide show presentation support World Missions. His congregations support the Holter mission family in Brazil and the French mission family in Japan. His youth work included interim seminary students, bible camp boards, and youth conference trips. He also enjoyed hospital and nursing home visits, chaplaincies, and prison ministry. He was an honored member of Hallinglag of America.
He was married Sept. 8, 1956 to Roma Rae Seaver at Capron Lutheran Capron, IL. They met during Tenner's internship in Chicago where Roma had received her RN degree from Lutheran Deaconess Hospital. Roma's pastor, E. G. Burtness and Tenner's father officiated at the wedding. Four sons were born to this union. Tenner was known for 50 years of tennis playing, enjoyed speed skate racing, ski jumping, and month long family camping trips.
Tenner is survived by his wife, Roma of 57 years, his children Tenner III (Sheila) and grandchildren Emma, Luke, Gabriel, Kate of Inver Grove, MN; Mark and grandchildren Taylor, Andrea (Andrew) and great-grandchild Everly of Williston, ND; Erik (Anita) and grandchildren Ryan, Sean of Spokane, WA; Kirk (Mary) and grandchildren Emily, Anna, Ruthie of Stuttgart, Germany; sister, Grace (Lew) Hines of Billings, MT, sisters-in-law, Amaryllys, Betty, Dorothy (Richard) Gildseth, brother-in-law, Robert Seaver and many nieces and nephews.
Tenner was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Tenner and Grace Thompson; brothers, James "Bud", Ellis, Duane and wife, Beverly, Wilbur "Bill"; 3 nephews; brother-in-law, Ronald Seaver and tennis partners, Harold Ness and Pastor Arnie Wasnik.
The family requests, in lieu of flowers, memorials to the Rev. Tenner C Thompson II Endowed Scholarship at Concordia College, Moorhead, MN. Memorials may be sent to the family or Concordia.
