Richard "Bud" Allenspach was born January 26, 1920 in Campbell, Minnesota to Albert and Martha (Witt) Allenspach. He worked and lived on the family farm with his four brothers and five sisters until the age of 17. He attended school in Campbell through the 7th grade. After the death of his father and older brother, Art, he moved to Hancock with his mother and younger sister, Irene. He worked for several years at Hancock Concrete before moving to St. Paul to live with his sister and her husband, Fredia and Joe Matczynski. During this time he was employed at a concrete block plant.
While living and working in St. Paul, he met Verdella Luebke. He and Della were united in marriage in 1945 at the Lutheran Cathedral in St. Paul, MN, where he was also baptized. In 1946, a son, Dan, was born. Bud and Della moved back to Hancock, where their 2nd son, Bruce, was born in 1951 and Bud returned to work at Hancock Concrete. While living in Hancock, Bud and Della joined St. John's Lutheran Church, where both were active members. Bud retired after 40 years at Hancock Concrete.
In his retirement years he enjoyed wintering in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, where he stayed with his sister Katherine Erickson. He attended Our Savior Evangelical Lutheran Church of Lake Havasu City, where he had many close friends. One of Bud's favorite pastimes was fishing, which he enjoyed on Lake Emily, Page Lake and at his sister Kay's cabin on Lake Minnewaska. After Della's death in 1984, Bud lived out his life in Hancock, where he was often seen out walking. He was a man of deep faith and he is now walking with lighter steps.
Bud died on Wednesday, November 21, 2007 at Abbott Northwestern Hospital from complications following surgery. He lived to reach the age of 87 years.
He is survived by two sons: Dan Allenspach and his wife, Ferolyn Angell of Hancock and Bruce Allenspach of St. Cloud and many nieces and nephews.
