Richard Beveridge

The memorial service for Richard A Beveridge of Starbuck, MN will be held on Thursday, July 28, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Fron Lutheran Church in Starbuck, with Pastor Paul Johnson officiating. Visitation will be held on Thursday 1 hour prior to the services at the church. Burial will be at Fron Cemetery, near Starbuck.

Richard Alexander Beveridge, son of James and Dot (Morris) Beveridge, was born May 12, 1915 in Appleton, Minnesota. He was raised west of Appleton and attended country school. He proceeded to finish his elementary through 2 years of depression college education in Appleton before transferring to the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities. At age 15 he joined the National Guard. During his time in the cities, he joined the Naval Reserves in Minneapolis where he eventually was accepted into the flight school program and became an aviator and U.S.Naval officer.

After dating through high school and at Depression College, Richard was united in marriage to Rosella J Sorenson on December 23, 1939 in Appleton, MN. Through this union, three children, Richard D, Patricia and Becky were born. The Beveridge's were married for 71 years and Rosella presently resides at the Minnewaska Lutheran Home, Starbuck, MN.

Dick had an active naval career and experienced or witnessed a lot of history in the making. He was in the first Atlantic fighter plane squadron flying off a carrier to hunt down German submarines in World War II. He flew the first naval fighter jets and was flying when the sound barrier was finally broken and personally flew the speed of sound. He retired as a Captain with twenty nine distinguished years served in the United States Navy.

After retirement in 1959, the Beveridge family moved to Coronado, California, where Dick went back to college at San Diego State and received his Bachelor Of Science Degree and his secondary teaching credential. A new career began at Grossmount High School by San Diego where he taught shop to special needs boys, physics and advanced physics. In 1966, the Beveridge's moved to Pope County Minnesota where they built a home on Priest Point on Lake Minnewaska. He continued to teach for many of the schools around the area and also was a substitute teacher for several years.

Dick always had to be learning and had a large diverse collection of books. Keeping up with current U.S. government events and politics was a must. He loved flying airplanes and continued being an active pilot to the age of 92 when he finally sold his last plane, a 150 Cessna. Richard was a member of the Pope County Flyers, the VFW of Starbuck and the Lakeside Dance Club.

Richard entered into rest on July 21, 2011 at Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood, Minnesota. He lived to the age of 96 years.

He is survived by his wife, Rosella S. Beveridge, two children, BeckyRae (Royce) Beveridge-Braaten and Richard D. Beveridge all of Starbuck; one brother, Mickey Beveridge Birmingham, AL; four grandchildren, Nicole Beveridge, Rick Beveridge, Anja (Anthony) Carlson, and Robin Stoltz; seven great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Dick was preceded in death by his daughter, Patricia Soucie, a grandson, Scott Guthrie, his parents, two brothers, Jim and Pete Beveridge, and one sister, Hope Pollock.
