Funeral services for Rita Schultz of Herman, MN will be held Thursday, April 16, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Charles Catholic Church in Herman, with Father Mike Kellogg officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m., with a prayer service at 7:00 at the Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris and for one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday. Burial will be in St. Charles Catholic Cemetery in Herman.
Rita Mae Kopel, daughter of Leo and Anna (Neuroth) Kopel, was born June 15, 1922 on the family farm in Donnelly Township, Stevens County, Minnesota. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Theresia's Catholic Church in Donnelly. Rita attended country school through the 8th grade, before attending and graduating from Alberta High School in 1940. On October 13, 1941, she was united in marriage to Fred Schultz at St. Theresia's Catholic Church. The couple lived outside of Herman, where Fred did carpentry and helped out on the farm, until the early 50's, when they moved into Herman. Rita was a homemaker until 1976, when she started working various jobs in the Herman area; Larson's Jewelry Store, Herman Drug Store and the Herman Liquor Store. Rita retired after the Drug Store closed but remained very active in the Herman community. Rita was a resident at the Good Samaritan Home in Hoffman, before moving to the Traverse Care Center in Wheaton, MN in November 2013, where she has continued to live until the time of her death.
Rita was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church in Herman, where she was active in the guild. She was also a member of the Herman American Legion Auxiliary, Red Hat Society, Birthday Club and Homemakers Club. She was recipient of the Odd Fellows Hall of Fame. Rita enjoyed quilting (baby quilts and denim jeans), cards, embroidery, entertaining family and friends, making her famous orange rolls, Sally Anne's and birthday cakes for the grandkids. She enjoyed road trips to California, Montana and Nebraska to see family. She had a memorable trip to Ireland and to Winnipeg, Canada where she was chosen part of an honorary group for the festivities. She was also delighted on her river rafting trip with her son in Idaho.
Rita died on Sunday, April 12, 2015 at the Traverse Care Center in Wheaton, MN. She lived to 92 years.
She is survived by three sons: Jerry Schultz of Herman, Nick (Jan) Schultz of Imperial, NE and Steve Schultz of Riggins, ID; three daughters: Kathy (Dave) Snell of Chokio, Sandy (Jim) Hasal of Lake Elsinore, CA and Lori (Tom) Boehmlehner of Wheaton; one brother: Ed (Lou) Kopel of Donnelly; one sister: Mary Ann Vipond of Norcross; 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; three children: Charles, LeRoy and Marcia; one grandson: Maxwell Hasal; her parents; three brothers: Lawrence (Agnes) Kopel, Walter (Viola) Kopel and Joe (Evelyn) Kopel and three sisters: Betty (Tom) Riley, Edna (Matt) Marty and Rose Marie (Duane) Sprouls.
