Robert John Guter, son of Steven and Mary (Smith) Guter, was born February 19, 1919 in Morris, Minnesota, where he was baptized and confirmed at Assumption Catholic Church. Bob received his education and graduated from St. Mary's Catholic School in Morris. Following high school, he attended two years at St. Thomas College. In 1941, he enlisted in the United States Army, where he served as a captain in WWII, stationed in the Aleutian Islands. Bob received an honorable discharge in 1945. On September 11, 1944, he was united in marriage to Helen Jeanne Cairney at Assumption Catholic Church in Morris. The couple lived in Morris, where they raised their children and Bob worked at Henry's Candy Company and later began an entry level job at the Morris Post Office, eventually serving as postmaster.
Bob was a devoted member of Assumption Catholic Church in Morris, where at a young age he served as an altar boy for many years. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Knights of Columbus. Bob enjoyed baseball, gardening, fishing and golf. He especially enjoyed time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Bob died on Wednesday, June 13, 2007 at the Courage Cottage in Morris, MN, having lived to reach the age of 88 years.
He is survived by his wife: Jeanne Guter of Morris; five daughters: Mary (Dick) Verdier of Oriental, NC, Sharon Stewart of Lafayette, CA, Sue (Dennis) Zahrbock of Cumberland, WI, Sandy (Curt) Larson of Hudson, WI and Barb (Bill) Boyle of Klamath Falls, OR; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one sister: Lorraine D'Ambrose and one brother: Jim Guter of Merrimac, NH. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother: Earl Guter and two sisters: Shirley Randa and Betty Ann Guter.
Honorary pallbearers are all of Bob's grandchildren: Donna Williams, Stephanie Zahrbock, Lori Bowman, Andrew Stewart, Erin Anderson, Rick Verdier, Rachael Friesen, Katie Stewart, Mandy Wilner, Peter Boyle, Luci Carter, Meredith Larson, Bridget Boyle. Special musical selections will be provided by Bob's granddaughter: Stephanie Zahrbock and great-granddaughter: Sabrina Zahrbock-Loxtercamp; son-in-law: Curtis Larson, granddaughter: Meredith Larson and all of Bob?s great-grandchildren.
Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris is in charge of the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to Hospice and the Courage Cottage in Morris, MN.
