Bob was the second child of Luther and Irene (Olson) Nelson born on January 22, 1950 in Starbuck. He was baptized and confirmed at the Minnewaska Lutheran Church in Starbuck. Bob attended school in Starbuck and graduated in 1968. He then went on to attend College at Valley City State in Valley City, North Dakota, where he continued to be an outstanding athlete playing football.
Bob returned to Starbuck and worked for Burlington Northern Railroad, as a section man for many years. On May 22, 1982, Bob was united in marriage to Becky Wilken at St Mary's Catholic Church in Alexandria. The couple made their home in Starbuck, where they were blessed with two daughters; Bobbi Jo was born March 19, 1983 and Brooke Marie was born May 16, 1984.
Hunting, fishing, and golfing were some of Bob's favorite things to do. He was looking forward to spending a lot of time fishing this summer and although he loved to fish, he never liked to eat them and always gave them away! To the surprise of his many friends, Bob loved to cook and bake. He is well known for his famous pumpkin bars and krumkake.
Bob is survived by his wife of 31 years, Becky Nelson, Starbuck, his daughters, Bobbi Jo (Ben) Schmidt, St. Joseph, and Brooke (Corey) Knabe, Kensington; his mother, Irene Nelson, Starbuck; his brothers, Jerry (Ruth Ann) Nelson, Starbuck and Mike (Amy) Nelson, Pillager; mother-in-law, Loretta Wilken, Alexandria; three granddaughters, Madison Schmidt (age 3.5 years), Kaylee Knabe (21 Months) and Brynlee Schmidt (2 Weeks); and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father, Luther and his father-in-law, Hugo Wilken.
Bob's family and friends will dearly miss him. What an honor and privilege it has been to have him in our lives and to be given the last 10 days to say our goodbyes. He is known by many as being a "Good Man" and was always there when you needed him. He will be missed by many people.
Starbuck Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral arrangements.
