Robinson Abbott

A Celebration of Life for Robinson Abbott of Morris will be held Sunday, July 13, 2014 from 4 to 6 p.m. at his residence, 205 E 6th St in Morris.

Robinson (Robie) Shewell Abbott passed away on July 5th, 2014. The son of Charles Shewell Abbott and Margaret Robinson Abbott, he was born on June 23, 1926 in Philadelphia, PA. He grew up in Hempstead, Long Island, N.Y., attended the local schools and after graduation from high school, enrolled in Bucknell University in Lewisburg, PA, where he majored in biology. From Bucknell he attended Cornell University in Ithaca, N. Y., again majoring in biology with an emphasis on ecology. While there, he met and married Rose Marie Savelkoul, a fellow graduate student. His first teaching position was at Smith College, Northhampton, MA. Subsequently, in 1961, he became one of the early professors at the newly opened University of Minnesota, Morris (UMM)campus. He taught general biology, plant ecology, plant morphology, plant taxonomy, and oceanography. He led annual field trips to Lake Itasca, plus field trips to Arizona and Texas to study desert and ocean environments.

He served as acting chair and chairman of the Science and Math Division in the 60's and 70's and also served on numerous committees both at UMM and at the main campus in Minneapolis. Robie retired in 1991 after 30 years of enjoyable teaching.

Robie enjoyed boating, target practice and the "great outdoors", especially the ocean.

He is survived by his wife Rose Marie, children Rodman P. Abbott (Shelley), Jane P. Watts, Bartram S. Abbott (Peggy) and Braden K. Abbott (Cynthia) and grandchildren Kayla Abbott, Eric Abbott, Rebecca Watts, Kathryn Abbott, Emma Abbott, Brian Thompson, Anna Thompson, and John Thompson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to the Alzheimer's Association.
