Roy Irvin Fluegel, son of Ernest and Rose (Heines) Fluegel, was born July 14, 1912 in Scott Township in Stevens County, Minnesota, where he grew up on the family farm. When Roy was 12, his father passed away and Roy and his siblings along with a hired hand, were responsible for the chores. He graduated from Alberta High School and the West Central School of Agriculture in Morris, before working for Stevens County Farm Services. On January 24, 1939, he was united in marriage to Virginia Winter. The couple was blessed with seven children. Roy worked as a Cat Skinner for the United States Government in Washington State, the Aleutian Islands and Greenland. He later worked as a milk inspector for Kraft Foods in Melrose. Roy was the manager of the Donnelly Coop, the "V" store, where his children grew up. He then managed the food and dry goods Coop in Sacred Heart, where he retired. Roy and Virginia then moved to Chokio and to Morris in 1995. Virginia died on November 30, 2000. Roy continued to live in Morris until the time of his death.
Roy was a member of Assumption Catholic Church in Morris. He was an electronic gadget nut and enjoyed building ham radios and computers. Roy loved music and as a young adult, he played the accordion in a polka band. He enjoyed spending time with family, especially after his retirement.
Roy died on Saturday, August 19, 2006 at West Wind Village in Morris, having lived to reach the age of 94 years.
He is survived by one daughter: Jeanine (Tom) Hess of Litchfield; five sons: Richard Fluegel of Superior, WI, Thomas (Jeanne) Fluegel of Blaine, John (Kristin) Fluegel of Ramsey, David Fluegel of Morris and Kevin (Melodie) Fluegel of Minneapolis; 19 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; one sister: Ethel Juergensen of New York Mills and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife; one son: Ernie; two great-grandchildren; his parents; two sisters and one brother.
Pallbearers for the service are Roy's children: Richard Fluegel, Jeanine Hess, Thomas Fluegel, John Fluegel, David Fluegel and Kevin Fluegel. Honorary pallbearers are: Spike Schultz and Bill Underwood and all who called Roy friend. Brenna Vick will serve as pianist/song leader for the service with Ken Beck serving as soloist.
