Memorial services for Ruby Damskey of Morris will be held Thursday, April 24, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cyrus, with Minister Minette Stalheim Johnson officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be in St. Petri Cemetery in Cyrus, MN.
Ruby Lucille Thompson, daughter of Sigvald and Marie (Anderson) Thompson, was born February 17, 1922 in Cyrus, Minnesota, where she grew up one mile south of town on the family farm. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Petri Church in Cyrus. Ruby attended and graduated from Cyrus Public School in 1940, with the achievement of being named Valedictorian. Ruby continued her education at Moorhead State Teachers College for two years before completing her Masters at the University of Minnesota. Following her schooling, Ruby taught school for ten years in several Minnesota rural school districts including Hancock, Lester Prairie, Le Sueur and Chisago City. She moved to Minneapolis and taught in St. Louis Park and Fridley. On July 2, 1955, Ruby was united in marriage to Ordell Anthony Damskey in Hudson, Wisconsin. The couple moved to Palo Alto, CA, where she attended Stanford University and later taught in the Las Lomitas School District and served as principal for several years. Ruby retired after 30 years of teaching. After the passing of her husband Ordell, she moved back to Minnesota, most recently living at West Wind Village in Morris, where she continued to live until the time of her death.
Ruby enjoyed sewing, playing piano, crossword puzzles, visiting with family and friends, camping and traveling. She traveled to various parts of the world including China, Turkey, Greece, Italy, Norway and Alaska.
Ruby died on Friday, January 31, 2014 at West Wind Village in Morris, having lived to reach the age of 91 years.
She is survived by one step-son: Steve (Ginny) Damskey of Minneapolis; one step-grandson: Chris (Jane) Damskey of Maui, HI; two sisters: Marilyn (Bennett) Schaffer of Hutchinson and Vernett (Lawrence) Kannegiesser of Morris; three brothers: Gorden (Esther) Thompson of Cyrus, Luther (Joycelyn) Thompson of Norcross and Donald (Rose) Thompson of Cyrus; one brother-in-law: Chuck Damskey of Sunnyvale, CA; one sister-in-law: Babe Damskey of Elk Grove, CA one aunt: Edna Dohmstreich of Cyrus and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one brother: Kenneth Thompson; and sister-in-law, Lorraine Thompson.
