Rupert Larsen

February 11, 1920 — July 30, 2005

Rupert Gustav Larsen was born February 11, 1920 to Ludwig and Sarah (Olsson) Larsen in Stevens Township in Stevens County. He grew up on the family farm while attending Reque Lutheran Church and School District #30. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and served at camps near Ely and Grand Marais.

Rupert married Alice Beebe in 1942 and moved to Hancock. He entered military service in February 1943 and served with Company K of the 145th Infantry as a driver. Following WWII, he worked as a well driller and produce store manager. While employed by the Hancock Coop Creamery in 1950, he was named Butter King in a competition in Willmar, which earned him a trophy and cash prize of $25. Most old-timers in the Morris area will remember "Rupe" as being foreman of Golden Cream Dairy in Morris, until it was bought by Cass Clay in the early 70's. He then obtained his chief boilers license and worked in the maintenance department of Medtronics in Minneapolis. After his retirement, he continued to work part time at the UMM heating plant.

Rupe enjoyed reminiscing with friends and family, taking long drives in the Chokio/Alberta countryside, and sitting down to a meal of lutefisk, potatoes and lefse. In 1992, he realized a dream-come-true when he purchased a 1927 Model T. He is fondly remembered for his tomato hamburger hot dish, his homemade coleslaw and his life-long search for Mrs. Sannikers dumpling recipe.

Rupert died Saturday, July 30th, at the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck, having reached the age of 85 years.
