Selma Harriet Hanson, daughter of Markus and Anna (Mithun) Hanson, was born August 18, 1916 in New Prairie Township in Pope County, Minnesota, where she grew up. She was confirmed on April 13, 1930 at Fron Lutheran Church in Starbuck, Minnesota. On March 24, 1934, she was united in marriage to William Noyes. To this union three children were born. The couple made their home in Starbuck, where Selma worked for and managed several restaurants in the area. She also served as head cook at the Minnewaska Lutheran Home. Following her retirement, she continued cooking and baking for her family and friends. William died on March 15, 1978. Selma has continued to live in Starbuck since that time.
Selma was a member of Fron Lutheran Church in Starbuck, the Hospital Auxiliary and the VFW Women's Auxiliary. She was very well known for her wonderful lefse and doughnuts. She enjoyed gardening, fishing and she especially enjoyed the time she spent with her family.
Selma died on Saturday, February 9, 2008 at the Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood, Minnesota, having lived to reach the age of 91 years.
She is survived by two sons: Robert (Bonnie) Noyes of Starbuck and Larry (Donna) Noyes of Starbuck; one daughter-in-law: Dorris Noyes of St. Cloud; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one son: George William Jr.; daughter-in-law: Inez Noyes; one infant grandson; three brothers: Edward Hanson, Louis Hanson and Marvin Hanson and three sisters: Olive Erlandson, Hilma Raaum and Betsy Rikomoto.
Pallbearers for the service are: Randy Noyes, Ricky Noyes, Rodney Noyes, Jonathan Noyes, Rhonda Johnshoy, Lori Armstrong, Annette Anderson and Michael Noyes. Monica Gosseling will serve as organist for the service with Vic Vatthauer serving as soloist. Starbuck Funeral Home in Starbuck is in charge of the arrangements.
