Selmer Arnold Olson, son of Harold and Caroline (Sevelson) Olson, was born September 21, 1918 in Vanhook, North Dakota. Sammy’s family moved to Clontarf, Minnesota three days later, where they lived and farmed. Sammy was baptized and confirmed at West Zion Lutheran Church, rural Hancock, where he also attended country school. When Sammy was 18, he went to Ely, Minnesota, where he served in the Civilian Conservation Corp. While serving his two terms he learned how to drive truck. Following his release from the CCC, Sammy returned to Clontarf and used the money he had saved to start Olson Trucking, where he and his brother hauled flax straw, gravel and later grain. On December 28, 1946, he was united in marriage to Ruby Swenson. Following their marriage, they made their home in Hancock, where they raised their three children.
Sammy enjoyed helping his son Mike farm, hunting, going to Lake Reno, playing and watching the stock markets and watching western TV shows. He listened to sermons at home and prayed for his family every day. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
Sammy died on Saturday, September 11, 2010 at Legacy Living in Morris, MN, having lived to reach the age of 91 years.
