Sheridan Francis Halbe, son of Francis E. and Marie (Bruns) Halbe, was born December 18, 1921 in
Morris

Minnesota
.
Sheridan
was baptized on January 29, 1922 and confirmed on June 2, 1935. He began his education at a country school in the Morris area, later attending St. Mary’s School in Morris.
He eventually attended
Morris
High School
, graduating in 1940.
After his schooling,
Sheridan
worked for a short time in
Wood River
,
IL
before entering the U.S. Marine Corps on June 22, 1942.
He served during WWII in the Pacific Theatre and was involved in the Battle of Guadalcanal.
He received his honorable discharge on October 13, 1945.
After his service, he worked off and on with the Railroad in
Minneapolis
and with John Nagl Construction, before taking a position as bartender with the City of
Morris
’ Municipal Liquors.
On January 30, 1950,
Sheridan
was united in marriage to Lorraine Podtburg in Morris.
To this union two children were born, Jim & Jane.
In 1952,
Sheridan
began working for the Morris Post Office as a temporary clerk/carrier and later as a dispatcher.
Eventually he took a mail carrier route in Morris.
On August 4, 1979, he retired after 31 years of service in the post office and military.
Sheridan
has continued to live in Morris since his retirement, where he was a member of Assumption Catholic Church and was involved in the Knights of Columbus.
He was a charter member of the Morris VFW Post 5039, where he served as commander in 1964-65 and also a member of the Morris American Legion, DAV and the 9-F Sportsmens Club.
Sheridan
enjoyed gardening, watching the Minnesota Twins, Vikings and Timberwolves, rides in the country and being outdoors.
Sheridan
died on Saturday, March 27, 2010 at the
Stevens
Community
Medical
Center
in Morris, having lived to reach the age of 88 years.
He is survived by his wife, Lorraine Halbe of Morris; two children: Jim (Cathi) Halbe of Morris and Jane (Larry) Swenson of Morris; three granddaughters: Tara, Kristen and Taylor Swenson of Morris; brothers-in-law: Lewis (Dorothy) Podtburg of St. Paul Park and Harvey Podtburg of Morris; sisters-in-law: Leona Halbe of Willmar, Viola (Arland) Sperr of Cokato and Mercida (Felix) Blaskowski of Glenwood as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Phillip Halbe; mother and father-in-law: Louise and John Podtburg; brothers-in-law: Lloyd and Lester Podtburg and sister-in-law & brother-in-law: Louise & Gary Anderson.
Pallbearers for the service are: Vern Wevley, Jim McRoberts, Oscar Brandt, Tom Dahl, Eugene Pasche and John Schultz.
Josh Fischer will serve as pianist/song leader for the service.
Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris is in charge of the arrangements.
Memorials are preferred to the Lakeland Hospice, Historical Society in Morris and the Verterans Home in Fergus Falls, MN.
