Shirley M. Anderson, daughter of Albert J. and Mildred (Hetland) Selland was born on March 9, 1928 in Letcher, South Dakota. She was baptized and confirmed in Storla Lutheran Church. She graduated from Letcher High School in South Dakota as salutatorian in 1946. Following high school, Shirley continued her education at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN where she graduated with a BA in Art and a minor in English. With a tremendous passion for learning, Shirley continued to take classes at Augustana and Concordia and even studied art in Europe with the University of Minnesota. Over the years Shirley studied under many accomplished artists from all parts of the country.

The only thing that rivaled Shirley's passion for learning, was a burning desire to teach and inspire others with what she had learned. She taught art first in Montevideo and then Alexandria, MN. It was while teaching junior and senior high art in Alexandria that she was asked to paint a backdrop for a high school musical. While working on stage, a young man singing with "The Blue Notes" quartet caught her eye. On March 24, 1956 Shirley married Dale B. Anderson at Central Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. They immediately purchased the Dairy Queen in Starbuck and spent their honeymoon in Dairy Queen training school in Minneapolis, MN. For the next couple of years the newlyweds worked alone together in their little ice cream shop in Starbuck. That little store became a legend and they owned and operated the Starbuck Dairy Queen right up to the time of Shirley's death. In 1968, Superintendent Boyd of the Starbuck school district asked Shirley to establish an art department. She agreed and finished out her teaching career at Starbuck High School, where she was the beloved art teacher to hundreds of students.

After retirement, Shirley became very involved in volunteer work for various civic organizations including the Starbuck Depot Society. She was a founding trustee of the Gladys Brang Foundation and she spent countless hours volunteering at Fron Lutheran Church.

What Shirley enjoyed more than anything was sharing her love of the Lord with others in prayer, fellowship and Bible study. Her heart and her door were always open to those in need of encouragement. The love of Jesus is what fueled her deep and abiding joy and genuine love for others.

Shirley went home to Jesus on October 24, 2013 at the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck having lived to the age of 85 years.

Shirley is survived by one son: Todd (Parvin) Anderson of Bloomington; one granddaughter: Bahar (Amir) Mesgar of Flower Mound, TX; two brothers: Arlan A. (Barb) Selland and Doyle (Sonya) Selland both of Letcher, SD and many nieces and nephews. Shirley was preceeded in death by her beloved husband Dale B. Anderson.
