Shirley Mae Swenson (Jenson), daughter of William and Clara (Heyn) Jenson, was born May 3, 1934, in Hinckley, Minnesota. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church. Shirley graduated from West High in Minneapolis and later attended the Swedish Hospital School of Nursing. On October 1, 1955, she was united in marriage to Lyle M. Swenson. Following their marriage, they moved to Hancock where they raised their family. During this time Shirley was employed by the Stevens County Hospital, the Morris Clinic, and finished her career at the Health Service at the University of Minnesota, Morris. Shirley impacted countless college students needing medical assistance and was just a mom away from home. It was common for students to stop by just to say hi to Shirley as they were passing through the building. Because of her commitment to the students of the University, Shirley was awarded the Outstanding Service Award, "given to a civil service staff member whose job performance is exemplary, whose attitude is helpful and cooperative, whose commitment to her unit is demonstrated by the suggestions of new ideas, and whose contributions to the campus are readily apparent." Shirley loved the students at the U of M-Morris; they kept her young.
Shirley was active in her church, serving as the treasure for the Ladies Circle and also for the church itself.
Shirley appreciated the simple pleasures of life; she enjoyed reading, completing crossword puzzles, trying new recipes, listening to music, celebrating birthdays with family and friends, and going camping and traveling with her family.
Shirley most enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. She will be remembered for her kind heart, her love of life, and her wonderful cooking.
Shirley passed away Sunday, January 15, 2017, at Prairie Senior Cottages in Alexandria, Minnesota, having lived to reach the age of 82 years.
Shirley is survived by her children: Beth (Scott) Smedstad of Starbuck, Jim (Andrea) Swenson of Morris, and Lyn (Rusty) Gwost of Little Falls; six grandchildren: Anna Smedstad, Alex, Zachary, and Carter Gwost; and Austin and Abbigayle Swenson; and brother: Vernon (Deanna) Jenson of Robbinsdale. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; sisters: Elaine Cronin and Louise Kroger; brothers: William, Marlin, and Harvey Jenson; brothers-in-law: Ed Cronin and Mel Kroger; and sisters-in-law: Marge Jenson and Shirley Jenson.
