Sophie Leona Banwart, daughter of Charles and Bertha (Widmer) Banwart, was born October 16, 1916 in Lamar, Missouri. When Sophie was three years old, her mother passed away from burns sustained in a gas iron explosion and seven months later, her father passed away. Sophie then moved to Morris to live with her aunt and uncle, Sadie and John Metzger. She attended school in Morris and Hancock. They later moved to Elgin, Illinois, where she did housework and later worked at the Elgin Watch Factory. On November 8, 1938, she was united in marriage to Lawrence William Nohl in Dubuque, Iowa. Following their marriage, the couple lived and farmed in the Hancock area, where they also raised their family. In 1949, Sophie was baptized into the Apostolic Christian Church of Morris. In March of 1975, they retired from farming and moved into Hancock. Lawrence died on October 25, 1988. Since that time, Sophie has continued to live at her home in Hancock with her daughters, Ruth and Lynda.
Sophie was a member of the Apostolic Christian Church in Morris. She enjoyed crocheting, reading, gardening and fishing.
