Stanley Zimmerman

Stanley (Buster) Zimmerman of Graceville, Minnesota, departed this life Monday, March 28, 2011, in Fargo, ND, surrounded by his loving family. The funeral service will be on Friday, April, 1, 2011, at 2:30 PM, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church with Rev. Gloria Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Chokio Lutheran Cemetery, Chokio, MN at a later date. Visitation will be Thursday, March 31, from 5:00PM to 7:00PM with a public prayer service at 6:30PM at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Chokio. There will also be visitation one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.
Stanley Zimmerman was born on January 16, 1924, in Chokio, MN, son of George and Pearl (Johnson) Zimmerman. He was raised on the farm and attended Rural Chokio School.He was baptized April 6, 1924 at the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Chokio, and confirmed March 13, 1938 at Zion Lutheran Church, Chokio. He served in the US Army from January 25, 1945-November 15, 1946 in the Pacific Theater, WWII.
Stanley married Dorothy (Dot) Rilley on July 10, 1947 at the Zion Lutheran parsonage. They farmed near Chokio, Herman, and, finally, Johnson, MN until their retirement.They were members of Our Savior's Lutheran Church where Stanley was actively involved. The church was an important part of his religious and social life where he served in several capacities on the church council, as deacon, and delegate to the Synod Assembly. His love of his community extended to 4-H and the Sportsmen's Club. Stanley's love of sports and school activities spanned several generations and earned him "fan of the year" for the Graceville Shamrocks. His family especially remembers Stanley's pride in his vegetable garden where he spent many hours weeding, watering, and harvesting.
The annual Zimmerman 4th of July Reunion symbolized the importance of family to Stanley, though his love for that family was expressed in many ways. The hard work that his children remember growing up on the farm was always tempered by how he taught them respect for the land, the wildlife it supports and all of nature. If there was a bird or deer that caught his eye, he took time to appreciate that moment with the son or daughter who held his hand. He taught his grandchildren to play whist or how to fish, while never forgetting to stop for ice cream. Stanley was a man of deep emotion and understanding. Every person in his family shows the mark of his love.
He is survived by the love of his life and wife of 62 years, Dorothy. He is also survived by four sons and two daughters, and their families: Charles (Dorothy) of Chisago City, MN and their children Heather (Jeremy) Peterson and Janelle Zimmerman (Jace Brendle); Wayne (David Hasbargen) of Oxbow, ND and children Matthew (Marisa) and Brandon (Heidi Heikes); Diane Wigglesworth (Tod Neubauer) of Fargo, ND and her children Brett (Jessica) Wigglesworth and Megan (Justin Diemert); Loren (Debbie Jo)of Colorado Springs, CO and their children Rebecca (Jason) Broussard and Victoria (Elgin) Snider; Luann (Greg) Kleindl of Graceville, MN and their children Eric (Melissa) Kleindl, Christina Wills, and Danny; Les (Beth)of Alexandria and their children Amy (Chris) Schulz and Joe (Jamie Knakmuhs); and 17 great-grandchildren, Isaac Peterson, Iris and Jasper Brendle, Eli and Owen Zimmerman, Jackson Wigglesworth, Lauren and Ashlyn Diemert, Bradley and Aubrey Broussard, Keegen and Olivia Snider, Mackenzie and Tyler Wills, Annika and Sierra Kleindl, and Lily Schulz. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Don (Barb) Rilley of Chokio and sister-in-law Doris (Joe) Wilkins of Rockwall, TX.
Stanley was preceded in death by his parents; one brother and three sisters; infant daughter Debra Lynne and son-in-law, Carl Wigglesworth.
