He returned to the family farm east of Donnelly, where he spent the next 51 years farming. Steve was united in marriage to Arlene Kruize on September 1, 1966, through this union 6 children were born. The family operated a dairy farm until 1997 and Steve continued to farm the land until his passing. Steve was very proud to have spent his entire life on the family farm.

He was a devout Catholic, a passionate conservative and an AMC enthusiast. He had a love for poetry, country western music, and motorcycles. Though Steve was thrifty, he was more than generous to the ones he loved.
