Skip was the son of Margie F. Sherstad of Glenwood and the late Emmett M. Sherstad. Skip was born on August 1, 1954 in Morris, MN. He was baptized into the Christian faith at Kongsvinger Lutheran Church in Donnelly, MN and confirmed his faith at First Lutheran Church in Morris, MN.
Skip attended elementary grades in Donnelly and at the age of nine, his family moved to Morris, where he attended Morris Public School, graduating May, 1972. While in school he was active in the Boy Scouts. In high school, he was on the wrestling team, where he served as co-captain his senior year. Following high school, he attended the University of Minnesota Morris, earning his bachelors degree in Bio-Chemistry and Business. Following his schooling, Skip entered the real estate business and in 1981 owned and operated Skip Sherstad Realty in Morris. He was awarded an MBA degree from the University of Minnesota in 1984. After several years of owning his own business, Skip joined Results Realty Company in Morris until 2002, when he began working for the Minnesota Department of Transportation as a Real Estate Representative in the Willmar District office. He moved to Willmar in 2004, where he has lived since that time.
Skip was elected to the Morris City Council, serving several terms. He was then elected to the Stevens County Board of Commissioners, serving 12 years and in 1995 elected chairman of the Minnesota Counties Insurance Trust. He has served on the board of the United Farmers & Merchants State Bank since 1992. Skip enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting and gardening. He especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
Skip died on Wednesday, February 20, 2008 at his home in Willmar of natural causes. He lived to reach the age of 53 years.
He is survived by his mother: Margie Sherstad of Glenwood; three sisters: Jodi (Donald) Jordon of New London, Kristin (Robert) Willert of Alexandria and Sheila (Peter) Postiglione of Loveland, CO; five nieces: Anne, Amy and Ashley Willert, Olivia Jordon and Gina Postiglione and two nephews: Vincent and Stuart Postiglione. He was preceded in death by his father: Emmett M. Sherstad; his grandparents and several uncles, aunts and cousins.
Pallbearers for the service are: Jodi and Don Jordon, Kristin and Bob Willert and Sheila and Peter Postiglione. Honorary pallbearers are Olivia Jordon, Anne Willert, Amy Willert, Ashley Willert, Vincent Postiglione, Gina Postiglione and Stuart Postiglione. Deb Mahoney will serve as organist for the service with Ken Hodgson serving as soloist. Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris is in charge of the arrangements.
