Stirling Tomlin

The funeral for Stirling "Tommy" Tomlin, of Morris, Minnesota will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Morris, with Reverend Gene Anderson officiating. Visitation will be on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Pedersen Funeral Home, Morris. Burial will be at a later date at the Summit Cemetery, Morris.

Stirling Thompson Tomlin, son of Stirling and Frances (Thompson) Tomlin was born on October 12, 1934. He was baptized at his grandparents' home in Henning, MN by Rev. Drage and was confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Morris by Rev. Larson. Tommy grew up and attended Longfellow Grade School in Morris and graduated from Morris High School in 1952. During his high school years, Tommy was active in sports playing football, where he was all conference and basketball, where he was captain of the team. He attended college at the University of North Dakota, University of Minnesota, and St. Cloud State University before entering the United States Army in January of 1955. He was honorably discharged in December of 1956, and returned to Morris. Through his high school summers, Tommy worked for the Stevens County Highway Department. Upon returning to the area, he began full time, holding the position of assistant county engineer for many years before his retirement in 1991. He also drove the veterans van for 20 years; during those years he gave over 4500 hours of his time and drove 250, 000 miles, transporting hundreds of area veterans.

Tommy was a member of the First Lutheran Church. He was an active member of the American Legion, AmVets and V.F.W. Clubs in Morris, he had served as past commander for the American Legion and AmVets. At the present time Tommy was the Chaplin of the Morris American Legion. He honored many veterans over the years serving on the local color guard in the Morris area. Tommy was also a member of the Summit Cemetery Board.

He enjoyed hunting ducks and pheasants and contributed time and money to many area hunting clubs. He will be remembered as a man of few words, with a big heart and was generous to all those around him. Tommy was a "Dogs Best Friend."

Tommy died on Friday, April 21, 2017 at his home in Morris. He was 82 years old.

He is survived by one sister: Harriet (Bob) Stevenson, Morris, MN; three nieces: Kathy (Kevin) Sheehy, Savage, MN, Barbara Stevenson, Morris, MN and Sally (Mike) Ward, Rockford, MN; one nephew: Jeff (Marie) Johnson, Savage, MN; five great-nieces and great-nephews: Marisa Stevenson, Betsy Ward, T.J. Johnson, Joe Johnson and Zack (Megan) Ward and several cousins. Tommy was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, (twin sister) Shirley Tomlin and Elizabeth Johnson, one brother, Charles Tomlin and a brother-in-law, Ted Johnson.
