Susan was born in Minneapolis, MN, on April 28, 1952, the daughter of Harold Burton and Mary Catherine (Greiner) Wistrand. She graduated from Edina High School. Susan married Jeffrey Andrew Hauger in June 1976.
Susan received her Bachelor's degree from Concordia College, Moorhead, MN and her Master's of Education from The College of St. Scholastica. Susan began her teaching in Appleton, MN prior to moving with Jeffrey to the Air Force base in Dover, DE, where she was the Director of Christian Education at the People's Church before the couple returned to the Midwest in 1980 and made their home in Morris, MN. After helping her husband set up his dental practice, Susan returned to the classroom, teaching in several area schools, Chokio-Alberta, Herman, Hancock and Morris.
She was the recipient of The Christa McAuliffe Fellowship Award that is given to outstanding teachers to continue their education. Her persistent contribution to student learning was recognized by her peers when they voted her the Morris Area Teacher of the Year.
She loved books and she loved words. She possessed a shrewd wit. This combination made her a thought-provoking conversationalist. As did her willingness to listen, often setting aside what she was doing to focus, entirely focus, on the one seeking her attention.
She was also a natural teacher. Her interaction with students was a delight to watch. She found joy in witnessing children's excitement after they fully grasped a concept that, up until then, had been lurking on the peripheral, just out of reach. She possessed the rare gift to see past a student's attitude, and sometimes anger, to the real child.
In the spring of 2013, Susan and Jeffrey opened their house and hearts to Nevaeh and MeMarie Whitemoutain. For nearly a year their home was again filled with love, laughter and tears as they help mold the lives of the two young girls.
