Sylvia Schmidt

Funeral services for Sylvia Schmidt of Morris will be held Monday, May 11, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at Assumption Catholic Church in Morris. Father Bob Kieffer will be officiating. Visitation will be held Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris and for one hour prior to services at the church on Monday. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Morris.

Sylvia Annabelle Sand, daughter of Arthur and Alice (Bergren) Sand, was born September 16, 1931 in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. Sylvia was raised in Wendell, Minnesota and went to Elbow Lake High School, where she met Jerry while cheerleading for the sports teams. Sylvia graduated in 1949. Following her graduation, she attended college at St. Cloud State University. She then ventured to Minneapolis where she worked for Northwestern Bell. On November 1, 1952, she was united in marriage to Gerald W. Schmidt at the Assumption Catholic Church in Morris, and were happily married for 63 years. Following their marriage, the couple went to San Diego, California where Jerry was a Marine at the Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. The couple returned to Morris in 1954 where they raised their four children: Tone, Ted, Gail and Craig.

Sylvia was well known and respected within the state DFL community. She was elected the county chair on several occasions, the 7th district elected her their secretary, and also a delegate to the national convention in Chicago in 1996. Sylvia was also an election judge in Steven County. Sylvia participated and enjoyed various activities in the community including: Girl Scout Leader, Bridge club, needle work and an avid reader. She enjoyed spending the summers at her lake home on Ten Mile Lake and wintering in Destin, Florida.

Sylvia passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, May 7, 2015, having lived to reach the age of 83 years.

Sylvia is survived by her husband: Jerry W. Schmidt; four children: Tone (Chris) Schmidt, Ted (LouAnn) Schmidt, Gail (Paul) Kloos and Craig (Pat Robinson) Schmidt; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother: Paul Sand; niece: Kristi Sand and special friend: Shirley Schultz.

The family would like to acknowledge the work and support from the Knute Nelson Hospice program during her final days. A special thank-you to Kara Robertson, Sylvia's care-giver for the last five years and a friend of the family.
