Funeral services for Thelma Leegaard of Hoffman will be held Saturday, May 7, 2011 at 4:00 p.m. at Kongsvinger Lutheran Church, rural Donnelly. Reverend Judy Gelinske will be officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Thelma R. Anderson, daughter of Boal and Helen (Hove) Anderson, was born May 24, 1921 in Thompson, Iowa, where she grew up and attended country school. On December 20, 1938, she was united in marriage to Ingvold Leegaard. Following their marriage the couple made their home in Kensett and Silver Lake, Iowa. In 1962, they moved their family to Donnelly, where they lived and farmed on the Barrett Ranch. Thelma also raised chickens, did farm chores and made and sold lefse. In 1972, Thelma and Ingvold moved to the Hoffman area, where they continued to farm. Ingvold died on October 1, 1975. Thelma continued to live on the farm until the 90's, when she moved to North Star Manor Apartments in Hoffman. In October of 2010, she became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in Hoffman, where she continued to live until the time of her death.
Thelma was a very dedicated member of Kongsvinger Lutheran Church in Donnelly, where she was active with the Ladies Aide. She was also a member of the Morris Eagles Club. She enjoyed dancing, trips to the casino, going to Sax's Café in Donnelly to visit with her friends and watching the Food Network and QVC. She also enjoyed the once a year trip to the Donnelly Threshing Bee, where she collected pens, pins and t-shirts. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family.
Thelma died on Wednesday, May 4, 2011 at the Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria, MN, having lived to reach the age of 89 years.
She is survived by one daughter: Iva (Jay) Gullickson of Farwell; four sons: Harold (Patsy) Leegaard of Dawson, John (Tammy) Leegaard of Gillette, WY, Robert (Sheryl) Leegaard of Barrett and Joe (Karen) Leegaard of Gillette, WY; 19 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law: Sharon Leegaard of Hickory, KY; one sister: Alica Christian of Foley, AL and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; one son: Jerry Leegaard; one granddaughter: Brenda Leegaard; three sisters: Hazel Larson, twin sister: Anna Branstad and Ora Hofbauer and three brothers: Oliver, Albin and Ernest Anderson.
Pallbearers for the service are: Thelma's grandchildren: Jesse Leegaard, Josh Leegaard, Korben Leegaard, Jodean Gullickson, William Allen and Jim Leegaard. Honorary pallbearers are the remaining grandchildren of Thelma. Sue Erdahl-Nelson will serve as organist for the service with Evangeline Anderson, Cassie Wiesner and the Kongsvinger Men's Duet providing special music.
