Funeral services for Verlys Nissen of Morris, MN will be held Thursday, November 1, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Morris. Reverend Dell Sanderson will be officiating. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris and for one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday. Burial will be in Summit Cemetery in Morris.
Verlys Selma Shaw, daughter of Albert and Helen (Thurmer) Shaw, was born April 14, 1932 in Donnelly, Minnesota. She was baptized on June 12, 1932 and confirmed on April 14, 1946 at Peace Lutheran Church in Morris. Verlys began her schooling at School District #15 in Donnelly Township and later attended Morris High School, graduating in 1949. On March 16, 1950, she was united in marriage to Kenneth Nissen at Peace Lutheran Church in Morris. Following their marriage, the couple lived and farmed near Hancock until 1954, when they moved to Owatonna, MN. Verlys worked for the J. C. Penney Company for 18 years and then for the next 8 years worked at Owatonna Tool. She retired in 1986, when she and Ken moved to Washington for one year, before moving to Morris in 1987, where she has continued to live until the time of her death.
She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Morris. She loved fishing, traveling, crocheting and knitting afghans. She especially loved spending time with her family.
Verlys died on Saturday, October 27, 2012 at West Wind Village in Morris, MN. She lived to reach the age of 80 years.
She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Nissen of Morris; one son: Duane Nissen of Olympia, WA; one daughter: Lorena (David) Wilking of Hancock; four grandchildren: Athena (Mike) Green, Aletha (Mike) Ream, Greg Kirkbride and Jeff (Sarah) Kirkbride and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by infant brother: David Shaw; father and step-mother: Albert and Jesse Shaw and mother and step-father: Helen and Harry Ritzschke.
Pallbearers for the service are Wesley Hoffman, Gerald Hoffman, Luverne Hoffman, Rolf Standfuss, Wally Ristow and LaVonne Watson. Honorary pallbearers are Verlys's grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Chris Hopkins will serve as organist for the service with Lisa Kleinwolterink serving as soloist. Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris is in charge of the arrangements.
