Verna Olsen

Verna Irene Wiese was born on October 29, 1928 in Elbow Lake, MN to Emil and Edna (Woessner) Wiese. She was raised and educated in Elbow Lake, graduating from Elbow Lake High School. After graduating high school, Verna worked at the Ag School in Morris. Verna was united in marriage to Floyd Olsen on January 5, 1949 in Elbow Lake. This union was blessed with five daughters. Verna and Floyd lived and farmed near Hancock. Verna raised her family and worked with Floyd on the family farm. In 1965, she joined the staff at Hancock State Bank, and in 1969 the family moved into the town Hancock. In 1985, Floyd passed away. Verna retired from the bank in 1992, and in 1994 moved to Annandale, where she has lived since.



She was a member of West Zion Lutheran Church and was active in Ladies Aide. Verna was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary in Hancock. She enjoyed gardening, dancing, reading, music, and playing the accordion and piano. Verna was known as a gracious host while entertaining at home and was a good listener.



Verna died on Friday, November 4, 2005 at the North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale, MN, having lived to reach the age of 77 years, after a four-year battle with cancer.



She is survived by special friend, Glen Mathison of Annandale; daughters, Karen (Ken) Wiggs of Modesto, CA; Diane (Ross) Hamilton of Janesville; Brenda (Ronald) Richmond of Woodstock, GA; Bonnie (Kevin) Eliason of Elk River; and Jean (Wendell) Spittle of Northfield; ten grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brother Donald (Katy) Wise of Elbow Lake; sister Dorothy Westrom of Elbow Lake. Verna was preceded in death by her parents; husband Floyd; sister, Ellen Westrom; brothers, Raymond and Edward Wiese.



Pallbearers for the service are Ken Wiggs, Ross Hamilton, Ronald Richmond, Kevin Eliason, Wendell Spittle, Kris Wiggs and Jeremy Hamilton. Honorary Pallbearers will be Erik Schmidgall, Kari Beauchene, Greg Richmond, Charity Nelson, Jonica Spittle, Brianna Spittle, Rachel Eliason and Brita Eliason. Carol Naig will serve as organist for the service. Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris is in charge of arrangements.
