Funeral services for Vernis Van Horn of Alberta will be held Tuesday, December 31, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris. Pastor Michael Peterson will be officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services on Tuesday.Burial will be in Summit Cemetery in Morris.
Vernis Heuer, daughter of Charles and Ida (Brunner) Heuer, was born January 24, 1916 in Stevens County, Minnesota. She attended school in Pine City, MN, graduating at the age of 16. She worked for the State of Minnesota in the Welfare Office from 1933 until 1942. On May 18, 1939, she was united in marriage to Jacob Van Horn in Milbank, SD. They resided in Chokio, MN and Hudson, WI, before settling down on a farm in rural Alberta, MN. From 1964 to 1980, Vernis worked as a bookkeeper at Cargill in Alberta. Vernis and Jake retired from farming in 1977 and moved to the city of Alberta. Jake passed away in 1995 and Vernis remained in their home until 2009, when she moved to Assisted Living in Alexandria and in 2011, she became a resident of Knute Nelson Nursing Home.
Vernis was a talented seamstress, who sewed all of her daughter's clothes while they were growing up. She also loved to crochet, do craft projects and was an avid reader. She also loved to play cards and dominoes with her family.
Vernis was a member of the Chokio United Methodist Church and had a strong faith. She read her Bible faithfully until her death. She loved her family and friends and time spent with them was very important to her.
Vernis died peacefully on Friday, December 27, 2013, surrounded by her four daughters at the Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria, having lived to reach the age of 97 years.
She is survived by her four daughters: Kay (Milton) Stenstuen of Appleton, Shirley (Russell) Tolifson of Brandon, Janis (Bob) Micheletti of Bloomington and Vicki (Paul) Strom of Brandon; 11 grandchildren: Scott Stenstuen, Todd Tolifson, Bryan (Lisa) Tolifson, Stacy (Casey) Stotts, James Tolifson, Jennifer (Gary) Gray, Jody (Don) Gore, Sara (Craig) Benning, Angela (Troy) Mennitt, John Strom and Jason (Sara) Strom; nine great-grandchildren: Elizabeth Stotts, Jacob Heutmaker, Kaytlyn (Jordan) Warnke, Jacob Tolifson, Sophie Heutmaker, Emily Poindexter, Noah Garcia, Samuel Strom, Gretchen Mennitt and two great-great-grandchildren: Brooke Olson and Carter Warnke. She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.
