The memorial service for Warren A. Vavra, Donnelly, Minnesota will be held on Thursday, August 14, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at the Pedersen Funeral Home Chapel in Morris, Minnesota with Jerry Woetzel and Noah Hamer officiating. Visitation will be on Wednesday at the Pedersen Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Thursday. Burial will be held at a later date.
Warren Arnold Vavra, son of Vilem and Margaret (Lund) Vavra was born on December 13, 1937 in Decatur, Nebraska. He grew up in the Decatur and Lyons, Nebraska area graduating from high school. Warren enlisted into the United States Army in 1959 and was stationed in Germany. He was honorably discharged in 1961 and returned to farm in Nebraska. Warren was united in marriage to Linda Smith on July 10, 1965 in Sioux City, Iowa. The couple made their home and farmed near Rosalie, Nebraska for 7 years; before purchasing a farm near Donnelly, in 1972. Warren attended Veterans Agricultural School in Alberta for two years. Warren and Linda have made "Mosquito Flats" their home for the last 42 years. They were engaged in farming, raising cattle and were pork producers. Warren retired in 1997. The couple then began traveling: taking many cruises, RVing across the U.S. (visiting family and friends) and spending several winters in Texas.
Warren was a life member of the AMVETS Post #290 of Morris, where he had served as post commander for 2 terms. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, golf and having friends and family help him make his homemade rhubarb wine. He will be remembered for his hearty laugh and his strong work ethic; however, he will always be remembered for the love of his family.
Warren died on Saturday, August 9, 2014 at the Sanford Wheaton Medical Center in Wheaton, Minnesota. He was 76 years old.
He is survived by his loving wife, Linda, Donnelly; one son Vilem (Laurie) Vavra II, Morris; two daughters, Jody (Shawn) Kellen, Alexandria and Jamie (Wade) Smith, Litchville, ND; six grandchildren: Jesse and Wyatt Vavra, Damon and Landon Smith and Amanda and Alissa Kellen; two brothers, Dale (Twila) Varva and Wayne (Evelyn) Vavra, all of Lyons, NE; three sisters, Marilyn Coates, Oakland, NE, Carol Smith, Freemont, NE and Caroline (William) Phillips, The Dalles, OR; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Warren was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, David.
