William Arthur Hafker, III, son of William Hafker and Florence (MacIsaac) Hafker was born on April 9, 1954 in Port Chester, New York, where he lived before moving to Chatham, Massachusetts at the age of five. Bill grew up in Chatham and graduated from Chatham High School in 1972. He attended Bridgewater State College, Cape Cod Community College and graduated from Fitchburg State College in 1980 with a bachelor's degree in Communications and Television Production. To fund his schooling, Bill worked as an auto mechanic and custom carpenter.
Following college, Bill was employed as a debit agent with Prudential Insurance Company and lived in West Dennis, Massachusetts. He married Judy Lauder on March 26, 1988 at Judy's parents' home in Marstons Mills, Massachusetts and the couple continued to live in West Dennis until moving to Donnelly, Minnesota in August, 1997. While living in Donnelly, Bill worked part-time for New Horizons Ag. Services in Herman, Minnesota and also drove sugar beet trucks for various area farms. From 2004-08, Bill traveled to Orlando, Florida, New Orleans, Louisiana and Houston, Texas to serve as a post-hurricane claims adjuster for Worley Catastrophe Company. In October, 2009, Bill was diagnosed with chronic leukocytic leukemia and lymphoma. He continued to reside in Donnelly until the time of his death.
Bill was a member and past vice president of the New England Chapter of the Hudson Car Club, past vice president and member of the National Rambler (car) Club, member of the National Hudson Car Club and member of the Extra Miler Club, whose members seek to travel in each county in the United States. In his high school and college years, he was a star baseball and basketball player, playing first base and pitching on the Cape Cod Community College team that won the Massachusetts Community College State Championship in 1975. He continued his basketball career during and after college as a player/coach in the Cape Cod Amateur Basketball League.
Bill loved dogs and cats, traveling around the lower 48 states by car and train, the New York Yankees and the New York Giants, the Boston Celtics, old movies, classic TV shows, classic cars from the 1940's to 1960's and had a vast collection of vinyl 45's.
Bill died on Tuesday, September 25, 2012 at Stevens Community Medical Center in Morris, Minnesota. He lived to reach the age of 58 years.
Bill is survived by his wife, Judy Hafker of Donnelly Minnesota; one brother, John Hafker of Yuma Valley, California; two sisters, Florence Roberts of Marstons Mills, Massachusetts and Jane (Richard) Doane of Mercer, Maine; many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
